Spencer (Azzawi) is a second-year Master of Public Policy student at the Hertie School. His focus is on comparative policy analysis, more specifically on how different political and economic systems shape health outcomes- both for their respective populations and within the world system. Before coming to Hertie, he worked for several years across the American healthcare and political landscape, ranging from emergency medicine departments to public health and environmental justice NGOs to the United States House of Representatives. Born and raised in Metro Detroit, Michigan he earned his Bachelors in Biological Sciences and Chemistry from Wayne State University. He is a part of the Chaldean ethno-religious diaspora from modern day Iraq and as such he also holds an interest in the question of sustainable development across west Asia, Africa, and the global south more broadly.
