The Hertie School Professor is acknowledged for her scientific contributions and policy engagement in the field of environmental economics.
Johanna Arlinghaus, Assistant Professor of Economics and Sustainability at the Hertie School’s Centre for Sustainability, has been named to Capital magazine’s prestigious “Top 40 under 40” list for 2025 in the society category. The award recognises emerging leaders across Germany in the fields of management, business, politics and society who are making significant contributions to public life, policy and social progress.
Johanna Arlinghaus is an applied environmental economist. Her main research interests concern the interactions between carbon prices, tax incentives and other fiscal environmental policies, and their impacts on emissions, firms, households, and the economy more broadly.
Being named to the Top 40 under 40 list reflects Johanna’s hard work and commitment to excellence in her academic career. In speaking about the award, Johanna also acknowledges research partnerships, mentoring and collaborations with colleagues at institutions she is affiliated with, such as the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the University of Oxford, PIK and the OECD, that have shaped her career. Regarding these collaborations, she says: “The excellent research on effective and just environmental and climate policies conducted at these institutions is now as, or more, important as ever, and I look forward to continuing this work together.”
Congratulations, Johanna! The Centre for Sustainability and the Hertie School look forward to your continued impact in research, teaching and public engagement.
