Andreas Voßkuhle, born in 1963 in Detmold, has held a chair in Public Law and served as Director of the Institute for Political Science and Philosophy of Law (Section I) at the University of Freiburg since 1999. His main areas of focus include constitutional law, general administrative law, and political and legal theory. After a brief tenure as Rector of the University of Freiburg, he was appointed as a judge and Vice President of the Federal Constitutional Court on May 7, 2008, and subsequently became its President on March 16, 2010. His 12-year term ended in June 2020. Voßkuhle’s extensive scholarly work has received significant recognition both domestically and internationally, extending its influence beyond the field of law. For instance, his collection of lectures from the past ten years, titled Europe, Democracy, Constitutional Courts, was published by Suhrkamp Verlag in 2021. Voßkuhle has been honored with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and several honorary doctorates. He is an active member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the German National Academy of Sciences – Leopoldina. Beyond his professional role, he contributes as a member of various foundation advisory boards and serves as the chair of the association "Against Forgetting – For Democracy."
